The Exhalia software was the brainchild of France Telecom Research and Development. Exhalia is now run as a separate business by one of France Telecom's ex employees. A separate sheet on the workings of the Exhalia software is enclosed.

The Vortex Active and its API (Application program interface*) is one of Exhalia's approved dispensing systems. The Vortex Active can dispense up to four aromas at any given time and length of time.

The Vortex Active is connected to a computer by a USB cable. No other cables are needed.

Using the Exhalia system a CD/DVD or almost any piece of film can be programmed to signal the Vortex Active to emit an aroma at any given time and length of time.

A set of Vortex Aroma cartridges is purchased to suit the client's application.

The Vortex Active has been designed as a clean cartridge system, with ease of use, to add the sense of smell and realism to almost any film.

The Vortex Active can also be used for other stand-alone applications outside the Exhalia software.

* API is a small program that ensures that the main software program recognises the hardware in this case the Vortex Active.
