Case study - Scott's Hut

Reminders frozen in time In 1911, Antartic Explorer Captain Robert Scott set off on his voyage to the South Pole sailing from England to Antartica via Australia and New Zealand.

Scott's Hut
Scott's Hut

Scott's Hut, at the entrance to Kelly Tarlton's is a life size recreation of Scott's original hut at Cape Evans in Antartica where Scott and his team set off on their attempt to reach the South Pole.

The door opens and there is the smell of ponies in the air, though they have been gone almost 100 years. The pony stalls smell of leather and horseflesh. It's a living museum, you expect the occupants to return at any time, it is a haunting experience enhanced by the aromas that permeate the surroundings.

The story of Scott of Antartica is well told and there are many useful websites where you can earn more about this ill-fated expedition A good start is at Kelly Tarlton's New Zealand.
